ROARING FEVER's 7th winner in March

03/21/10

The basketball court isn't the only place you will find "March Madness" this year.  Questroyal Stud's ROARING FEVER has seen his progeny "cutting down the nets" time after time at Aqueduct this month.

The latest "bracket buster", Roaring Aly, didn't let 27-1 odds stand in the way of victory in Saturday's 5th race.   The 6 furlong maiden special weight event for fillies three and up saw 8 competitors line up for a shot at the $38,000 purse.  Roaring Aly, making only her third lifetime start, broke on top, only to be quickly joined by second-choice Heavenly Pursuit.  Those two were to make the affair a match race, quickly pulling away from the field by 6+ lengths and battling each other every step to the wire.  In deep stretch, Roaring Aly showed grit and determination after the long battle, surging up at the last moment to take the victory by a head.  She stopped the clock in 1:12.33.

Trained by Cleveland Johnson for owner/breeder Diane Cardinale, the NY-bred 3YO improved her lifetime record to 3-1-1-0, with earnings of over $26,000.

March comes ROARING in!

03/15/10

Although the calendar says spring is still a week away, things have been heating up in a big way for the progeny of Questroyal Stud's ROARING FEVER.  His runners have been burning up the inner track at Aqueduct and, no doubt, it is only a matter of time before they are blamed as yet another cause of global warming.

The first two weeks of March have seen 7 individual winners, including 2 first-time starters, a 12+ length winner, and another coming off a 6 month layoff.  Below is a brief recap of this impressive streak of victories:

  • Maid to Win offered a preview of things to come when, on February 28th at Aqueduct, the 3YO filly exploded to a 12 3/4 length victory in her first lifetime start.  The impressive victory came in the day's second race, over a muddy track.  The talented filly covered the 6 furlongs in 1:13 for trainer Dominic Galluscio and owner Sanford Robbins LLC and was bred in NY by Hidden Lake Farm, Richard Gallagher and Joan Simpson.

  • Spa City Princess kept things going on March 6th with a determined wire-to-wire victory in a mile maiden special weight event in Aqueduct's 6th race.  Trained by Pat Kelly, the 3YO NY-bred filly clocked in at 1:40.37, banking the winner's share of the $49,000 purse for owner/breeder Adam Madkour.

  • Two races later, first-time starter Stormin Bolt sprinted to an impressive 7-length victory over another full maiden special weight field of 3YOs.  Pressing the pace from the start, the 3YO NY-bred colt took the lead at the top of the stretch and never looked back, drawing off and crossing the line in a solid 1:11.48.  Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin for owner Cam Allard, this colt is definitey one to watch.

  • The next day, in Aqueduct's 6th race, 4YO filly Roaring Ghost overcame a 6 month layoff to register an outstanding 5 length victory over her maiden special weight foes.  Trained by Bruce Brown for Pinnacle Farms, Roaring Ghost hails from Roaring Fever's first crop and was bred in NY by Joseph and Alfred Nastasi.

  • Victorious Song kept the momentum rolling on March 12th with a wire-to-wire victory in the 2nd race at a rainy Aqueduct.  Overlooked by the bettors as the longest shot on the board, the 3YO NY-bred filly never relinquished the lead in the maiden claiming event, tallying her first win for trainer/co-owner Keith O'Brien.

  • Finally, the 4YO filly Mustang Fever put an exclamation point on the month's accomplishments with her emphatic 3 length victory in Aqueduct's 8th race yesterday, March 14th.  The mile and 70 yard, NW1X allowance event was contested over a sloppy inner track and Mustang Fever swept to victory with a strong move on the turn edging clear in the stretch for a final time of 1:44.72.  Perhaps even more impressive, the victory came over 4 competitors who were victorious in the their respective last starts.  Yesterday's win gives the NY-bred filly 3 wins in 11 lifetime starts and career earnings of over $77,000 for trainer John Parisella and owners/breeders Saul and Max Kupferberg.

Mustang Fever, by ROARING FEVER, impressive winner at Aqueduct

11/20/08

Mustang Fever, a 2YO daughter of freshman sire ROARING FEVER, broke her maiden in convincing style in only her second lifetime start on November 13th, at a soggy Aqueduct.  The post time favorite in the 7 furlong maiden claiming event, Mustang Fever broke well and stalked the early pace, before rallying down the lane to win by a widening 3 lengths in a very professional performance.

Trained by John Parisella and ridden by Richard Migliore, the homebred filly has improved her lifetime record to 2-1-0-1, and brought home earnings of $13,900 for breeders/owners Saul and Max Kupferberg.   She is the third winner for her sire ROARING FEVER, a regally-bred son of leading sire Storm Cat.

Parasizastiff is 3rd winner for ANASHEED

11/19/08

Returning off a short 15 day rest, ANASHEED's 2YO daughter Parasizastiff rallied from off the pace to win Wednesday's first race at Penn National, breaking her maiden in only her second lifetime start.  The promising young filly stopped the clock in the 5.5 furlong maiden claiming event in 1:07.4, with apprentice jockey Edwin Rivera guiding her to victory over the fast track.

Bred in Florida by Terrapin Stables, Phillip and Marcia Cohen and Solitary Oak Farm, Parasizastiff is now 2-1-0-0, with earnings to date of just under $10,000 for owner/trainer Andrew Simoff.  An April foal, she is out of the Argentinian-bred mare La Alcazaba, a daughter of the Damascus-line stallion Proft Key.  La Alcazaba has proven herself a useful source of precocity and speed as the dam of the stakes-placed 2YO filly Anniversary Annie (by Miner's Mark) as well as the undefeated (2 for 2) Seminary Dan (by Irgun).

Parasizastiff is the third winner from ANASHEED'S (small) first crop.  A son of sire-of-sires AP Indy, ANASHEED, from limited opportunities, has already produced multiple winner and Florida Stallion Stakes performer Garter Belt, as well as recent Calder allowance runner-up Sweetlandofliberty.

Filly by ROARING FEVER wins Calder feature allowance

10/12/08 Rab Hagin NYbreds.com

In her second front-running daylight-margin victory in three starts, owner-breeder-trainer Lynne Scace's New York homebred MY REFLECTION captured Calder Race Course's feature allowance for two-year-old fillies going five furlongs off-the-turf on Columbus Day Monday, becoming the first allowance winner from the first crop of New York-based stallion ROARING FEVER. The dark bay state-bred was the youngest among nine starters -- having been foaled on April 16, 2006 -- but went off as the 3-to-1 second choice with jockey Eduardo Nunez on board for the third time in as many outings. The runner-up rival that pursued her from second place throughout the contest was coming off a seven-length romp at Calder 23 days earlier.

My Reflection was foaled at Liberty Stud in Ghent and is the second offspring and second New York homebred 2008 winner produced from Scace's homebred mare, seven-time winner Frans Reflection, who is by Aloha Prospector and is inbred 3 x 4 to Mr. Prospector. Scace, a resident of Ocala, Florida, is actively involved in the New York breeding and racing program: "Every year, I send up two or three mares," pointed out Scace, who also mentioned that she had bred the maternal granddam (second dam) of My Reflection, seven-time winner Tenacious Fran.

Roaring Fever (Storm Cat - Pennant Fever, by Seattle Slew) is a stakes-winning full brother to three-time Grade 1 winner Raging Fever ($1,458,198) and to graded winner Stormin Fever, whose 21 stakes winners from six crops of racing age include two millionaires plus New York-bred 2008 multiple stakes winner Stormin Normandy. The syndicated stallion stands at Dutchess Views Farm in Pine Plains under the management of Questroyal Stud, LLC, where he has stood for a fee of $5,000, live foal, since entering stud in 2005.

Global Hunter - by JADE HUNTER - wins Lure Stakes

10/12/08 Rab Hagin NYbreds.com

Scoring his first North American victory, L-Bo Racing's and Monte Pyle's Argentine-bred son of New York-based stallion JADE HUNTER, Global Hunter, rallied from off a scorching early pace in Oak Tree at Santa Anita's turf mile Lure Stakes on Columbus Day Monday and prevailed by a length in 1:33.82. The five-year-old southern hemisphere-foaled (October 7, 2003) stallion was favored at 1.40-to-1 among 10 starters in his third consecutive outing under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. and did not disappoint, boosting his earnings to $204,365 while improving his record to 6 - 1 - 7 in 20 starts. Trained in North America by A. C. Avila, Global Hunter had won three black-type stakes on turf in Argentina, including Group 2 and Group 3 events at 1,600 meters (about a mile).

Global Hunter's victory in the Lure pushed Jade Hunter's 2008 progeny earnings over $1.6-million through the second weekend of October and elevated his lifetime offspring earnings to almost $40-million ($39.8-million). Jade Hunter, a syndicated Grade 1-winning son of Mr. Prospector - Jadana (Ire), by Pharly, has sired 47 stakes winners, including four-time Eclipse Champion Azeri ($4,079,820) plus two other millionaires.

Carminooch, trained by Seth Benzel and ridden to victory by Mike Luzzi, extended his career mark to 6 wins in 16 lifetime starts, while bankrolling earnings of over $360,000 for owners Three Amigos Stable.

Polka Dancer newest 2YO winner for JADE HUNTER

12/30/06

With 2006 quickly waning, JADE HUNTER's 2YO daughter Polka Dancer waltzed her way to an impressive Maiden Special Weight victory in today's 5th race at Hawthorne.

Breaking outside from the 11 post, the filly took the lead with authority on the turn and was never challenged in the state-bred event, coming home in an unhurried 1:12.6 and winning by a clear 1 1/2 length margin.  It was a distant 4 lengths back to the post time favorite in third.

Polka Dancer, an April foal out of the Green Dancer mare On the Hop, has shown consistent improvement in each of her three lifetime starts.  To date she boasts a record of 3-1-1-1 and lifetime earnings of just under $21,000 for owner Stephen Sularski and trainer Tom Dorris.

JADE HUNTER, who as a juvenile sire has produced over 13 stakes horses and the earners of nearly $2.5 million, stands at Liberty Stud in Ghent, NY for a 2007 stud fee of $5000 LF.

Chip Hunter rallies in $100K at Fair Grounds

12/10/06 Bill Allen

JADE HUNTER'S 4yo stakes winning son Chip Hunter rallied from off the pace in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Turf Stakes at New Orleans' Fair Grounds to secure his first blacktype placing of 2006.

Racing outside throughout the 8.5 furlong event, Chip Hunter picked off horses through the stretch to close well and finish a game second to the heavy favorite, the Bill Mott-trained Desert Wheat.  Trained by James Hodges, and ridden by Carlos Gonzalez, the colt added $20,000 to his bankroll for owners Keep Moving Stable.

Bred in Louisiana by Jay Adcock, Chip Hunter is the third foal out of the Alleged mare Chips Please.  With yesterday's effort, he increased his lifetime earnings to over $165,000 and his record to 17-6-2-1.

Huckie earns smashing stakes win

12/10/06 Bill Allen

FAST PLAY's talented 2YO daughter Huckie came home the overwhelming winner of Saturday's $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Entering the race off an impressive win in the Creme de la Creme S. at Delta Downs, the LA-bred filly was stepping up against better competition in the 6 furlong event.  Sent off the second choice, at just over 2-1, the dark bay youngster broke evenly and settled in behind the leaders, well back of the opening fractions of :21 2/5 and the solid :45 2/5 half.  Turning for home with a wall of 6 horses across the track in front of her, things did not look very promising.  But jockey Cody Meche, knowing better than anyone how much horse he had, swung outside, 10-wide, to the center of the track, and urged his mount on.

Setting down for the stretch run, Huckie responded with a devastating kick, eating up gound and rivals with every stride.  Fair Grounds is known for it's long stretch, but this classy filly only needed half of it to overtake the leaders, overpowering them to win going away by 5 lengths.

Huckie has compiled an impressive record of 3 wins in 4 lifetime starts, with 2 stakes wins and earnings of over $108,000.  Quickly emerging as on of the best 2YO fillies in Louisiana, she appears to have a very bright future ahead of her.

=============================================================================================

Also on Saturday, FAST PLAY showed his ability to be a influence of class and racing success on either side of a pedigree when Grade 1 winning millionaire Magna Graduate, an Honor Grades son of the FAST PLAY mare Peacock Alley, strode to an easy victory in the Grade 3 Queen's County Hcp. at Aqueduct.  Under jockey John Velasquez the colt won the 9.5 furlong event by 6 lengths, in a final time one tick off the inner track record.  Winner of last year's Grade 1 Clark Hcp., and 3rd place finisher in 2005 Dubai World Cup, Magna Graduate is the most accomplished offspring of Fast Play's quality-producing daughters, who to date have produced over 18 stakes winners and over 160 individual winners.

Eclipse Champion-siring JADE HUNTER to New York

11/24/06 Rab Hagin NYBreds.com

Multiple Grade 1 winner JADE HUNTER, sire of 2002 Eclipse Horse of the Year and certain Hall of Fame filly/mare Azeri, has been moved from Kentucky to stand under the management of Questroyal Stud at Michaelyn Gamble's Liberty Stud, LLC, in Ghent, New York. His 2007 fee will be $5,000, live foal. With lifetime progeny earnings in excess of $36.1-million, the multiple Grade 1-siring son of Mr. Prospector becomes the leading active sire in New York based on cumulative offspring earnings and ranks among the Empire State's leaders in several other categories as well. He has 2006 progeny earnings approaching $1.2-million.

Jade Hunter has sired 43 stakes winners to date, which in addition to four-Eclipse-Championship-winning Azeri ($4,079,820) include other Grade 1 winners Yagli ($1,702,121), Stuka ($916,175), and Diazo plus Grade 2 winner and popular former New York stallion Halory Hunter -- the latter four all males. In two of his individual crops, the classically-bred stallion has sired eight stakes winners each, among them being two-time New York Thoroughbred Breeders (NYTB) champion filly and graded winner Best Friend Stro plus another New York-bred standout, Empire Classic winner Itaka. Although Jade Hunter's runners stay sound and frequently win stakes beyond their three-year-old seasons, eight of his stakes winners also have captured black-type events as two-year-olds. In addition to North America, his runners have won group events in Japan and Australia, so obviously he can sire turf standouts as well as main track graded winners.

Liberty Stud, which for three seasons stood 2006 second-crop sire sensation Strategic Mission (whose first New York-conceived offspring are current yearlings), is managed by Bill Allen.

Another 2YO stakes winner for FAST PLAY

11/18/06 Bill Allen

Questroyal Stud's Grade 1 winning son of Seattle Slew, FAST PLAY, was represented by his newest juvenile stakes winner today at Louisiana's Delta Downs, in the $50,000 Creme de la Creme stakes.

Huckie, making only her third lifetime start and first in stakes company, was entering the race of a solid maiden special weight victory on October 20th at Louisiana Downs.  Slightly overlooked by the public, she was sent of 4th choice among the field of 8 who lined up for the 5 furlong state-bred event.  Breaking well, Huckie was never far back, tracking the leaders through opening fractions of 22.34 and 46.87 for the half.  Around the turn she made her winning move, swinging three wide and overtaking the leader.  With a strong finishing kick, she overtook the leader, crossing the wire 3/4 of a length in front and stopping the clock in a final time of 59.56.  It was seven lengths back to the third place finisher.

Bred by Jody and Michelle Huckabay in Louisiana, and owned by Stacey Moak, this talented filly is a May foal out of the unraced Miswaki mare Heart River.  Inbred 3X4 to legendary speed influence Buckpasser, this filly is yet another example of the powerful Seattle Slew-Mr. Prospector cross, which has produced such standouts as Horse of the Year Mineshaft and Fast Play's own stakes winning son, Play Waki For Me, among countless others.

The $30,000 winner's share of the purse now brings Huckie's lifetime earnings to over $48,000 in only 3 lifetime starts.  She is the 14th lifetime juvenile stakes performer for her sire, and along with recent Panamanian Grade 1 winner Black Giant, is Fast Play's 4th stakes winner of 2006.

Fast Play stands at Liberty Stud in Ghent, NY for a 2007 fee of $3,500 live foal.

Carminooch second in Stuyvesant Handicap (G3)

11/18/06 Bill Allen

Carminooch, the 4YO stakes winning son of Questroyal's TOMORROWS CAT, ran a hard-fought second in Aqueduct's Saturday feature, the $100,000 Grade 3 Stuyvesant Handicap.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Carminooch was piloted by John Velasquez in the 9 furlong event, which was run over the Aqueduct inner track after all racing was moved from the main track due to the effects of a deluge of rain in recent days.  Breaking alertly from the 1 post, Velazquez guided Carminooch into a stalking position, saving ground on the rail while remaining in striking distance of the leaders.  Traveling well through opening fractions of :23 4/5, :47 3/5, and 1:11 3/5, Carminooch was poised to make his move.  As the field came through the turn, the other players began to advance, and soon they were 5 abreast.  The rail started to close down for Velasquez and his mount, and for a moment it looked as though they would be shuffled back and out of contention.  Forced to bide his time, with about a sixteenth to go Velasquez finally got enough of a hole to make a move and, angling out into the stretch, closed well to capture the place, one length off of the front-running Accountforthegold.

Carminooch, winner of the 2006 Ave's Flag Stakes at Aqueduct, increased his lifetime earnings to just under $320,000 in only his 15th lifetime start.  Bred in New York by Glen Gray Farm, and owned by the Three Amigos Stable, Carminooch is out of the Carr de Naskra mare Open Flap, and is one of 9 2006 stakes horses for his sire.

Tomorrows Cat stands at Metropolitan Stud in Pine Plains, NY for a 2007 fee of $7,500 live foal.

Big weekend for TOMORROWS CAT

10/22/06 Bill Allen

Questroyal Stud's TOMORROWS CAT had an incredible run over the weekend of October 20-22.

The weekend's performances started Friday evening at Remington Park, in the $100,000 Remington Park Oaks, a 1 mile turf event for three year old fillies.  Speed Wagon, already a stakes winner in 2006, ran a tough second in the open company event.  Closing in an impressive 11 4/5, Speed Wagon collected her $16,150 share of the purse, increasing her 2006 earnings to over $81,000.

On Saturday, the action shifted to beautiful Belmont Park, site of the 2006 New York Showcase day, a full card of NY-bred races including 8 stakes races, with purses in excess of $1 million.  The days 8th race, the $150,000 Mohawk Handicap for three year olds and up, was contested at the classic distance of 9 furlongs over a yielding turf course that had received more than its share of moisture in the preceding days.

In the full field of 10 was Austin Delaney's talented 5YO gelded son of TOMORROWS CAT, Continental Reins.  Trained by Jimmy Jerkens, the horse broke from gate 9 awkwardly, spotting the field valuable lengths, and trailed through the early stages of the race.  As the field came around the final turn, Continental Reins made his move, sweeping three wide and closing with a late rush to be up for the show, beaten only 2 necks for the full pot.  The $15,000 share of the purse pushed his lifetime earnings to well over $186,000 in only 14 lifetime starts.

As classy a performance as it was, the day's 9th and feature race, the $250,000 Empire Classic Handicap, was a stumbling start away from being a 1-2 performance for TOMORROWS CAT, who was represented by two sons in the race, SW Carminooch and MGSW West Virginia.  Carminooch, the 7-1 fourth choice, was piloted by John Velasquez and benefited from a clean start and a good trip.  Racing close up throughout, the 4YO colt closed well while 4 wide in deep stretch to finish a game second only a 1/2 length off the leader.  The gutsy effort increased the colt's lifetime earnings to just under $300,000 in 14 lifetime starts.

Meanwhile, perhaps the most impressive performance of the day was turned in by West Virginia, the multiple graded stakes winning and grade 1 placed colt by TOMORROWS CAT.  Recently purchased by Zabeel Racing, the colt was coming off a tough 2006 campaign, knocking heads in Grade 1 races throughout the country with some of the best horses around.  As the top-weighted 3/2 favorite, West Virginia was poised to continue his stellar 2006 season.  With the outstanding Garret Gomez aboard, West Virginia was dealt some miserable racing luck.  Hitting the gate solidly at the break, the colt stumbled badly and gave up valuable ground to a deep field.  Urged along inside by Gomez, West Virginia began to reel in the competition.  Turning for home, with the leaders in his sights, he began his rally.  In deep stretch, however, Gomez was forced to alter course to the outside to avoid a tiring rival and the momentary loss of momentum, in addition to the poor break, left too much to make up at the end.  He crossed the line 1 length behind the winner and second place finisher Carminooch (to whom West Virginia was giving 7 and 5 pounds respectively).

Despite the dissapointing bad luck, it was still a banner day for the connections of West Virginia.  With the show, the tough NY-bred colt from TOMORROWS CAT'S second crop passed the $1 million dollar earnings mark.  The seven-time winner makes his sire the youngest stallion in New York to sire a millionaire, and the only active stallion standing his entire career in New York to accomplish this impressive feat.

TOMORROWS CAT is a proven source of racing class for NY breeders.  He leads the state in number of 2006 stakes horses, with 9, and is tied for 2nd by the number of individual stakes winners in 2006.  The third leading sire in NY by 2006 earnings,  he has consistently been atop the sire charts since his first foals hit the track.

Standing at Metropolitan Stud, for a 2007 stud fee of $7500 LF.

In Saturday's $223,000(US funds) Grade 3 Grey Breeder's Cup Stakes at Woodbine, the talented 2YO CATCH THE FEVER made his stakes debut an impressive one, tallying a close second place finish in the 8.5 furlong event.  Contested over the Woodbine Polytrack, the colt trailed the field of nine through six furlongs, then closing with a burst of speed, powered past his rivals to be up for the place, just shy of the winner.  Still a maiden, this young gelding has shown both an affinity for the Polytrack surface as well as for distance, showing marked improvement each time he's been allowed to stretch out.

Boasting a lifetime record of 4-0-2-0, with earnings of over $45,000, this NY-conceived gelding has a bright future ahead of him.

Gold Fever stands at Metropolitan Stud for a 2007 stud fee of $5000 LF.

ANASHEED to stand in New York for 2007

10/01/06 Bill Allen The Blood Horse

Questroyal Stud is pleased to announce the arrival of ANASHEED to New York.

A son of leading sire and sire-of-sires AP INDY, ANASHEED hails from one of the strongest female families in recent memory.  Produced from multiple European champion FLAGBIRD (by NUREYEV), this talented colt counts as immediate family members Horse of the Year and Champion Mineshaft, Multiple Grade 1 winners RUNUP THE COLORS and TOMISUE'S DELITE, Mutiple Grade 1 winner and Broodmare of the Year PROSPECTOR'S DELITE, as well as the graded stakes winners TOP ACCOUNT, ROCK SLIDE, and MONASHEE MOUNTAIN.

Bred by Darley Stud Management, ANASHEED was a precocious racehorse, tallying an impressive 2nd place finish in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity, a race in which he was left at the gate and trailed through the first half-mile before closing with an explosive rush while racing 7 wide.  Earning over $100,000 while racing in the Darley silks, the colts career included a trip to Dubai where Sheik Mohammed's team prepared him for the Triple Crown trail.

Retired in 2004, ANASHEED stood his first season at stud in Florida, at Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud, where he covered 55 mares.  His arrival in New York fills a much needed void in the stallion market.  AP INDY has already established himself as one of the preeminent sires of the last decade and in light of the success of his latest standout, BERNARDINI, he shall continue to be a dominant force in North American racing.  In addition, he is quickly emerging as a sire of sires, with such notable sons at stud as APTITUDE, STEPHEN GOT EVEN, PULPIT, MALIBU MOON, JUMP START and GOLDEN MISSILE.

Owned by a syndicate, ANASHEED will stand the 2007 season at Liberty Stud in Ghent, NY for a stud fee of $5000 LF.
